Masala Pori - Masala Puffed Rice

Masala Pori - Masala Puffed Rice, this is one of an easy and simple snack that we can make for our tea time. This is also known as Kara Pori. Frying the puffed rice will give more crunchiness to it. My kids enjoy eating it. I learnt this preparation from my Mom. 

There is another variation that can be made to this snack - adding chilli powder instead of red chilli. I will post that recipe when I do it next time. Mostly I prefer this version as my kids don't eat if it is too spicy. Adding garlic will give an amazing aroma, I just love it!!! You could see in the recipe, I have added lot of garlic as I like it so much :)

Masala Pori - Masala Puffed Rice

Preparation Time : 5 Minutes | Cooking Time : 10 Minutes | Serves : 5 to 6

Pori / Puffed Rice - 100 gm.
Roasted Peanuts - 1/2 Cup
Garlic - 20 to 25 cloves
Dry Red Chilli - 3 No.
Curry Leaves - 2 Sprigs.
Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp.
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Urad Dal - 1 tsp.
Coconut Oil - 1 tbsp.
Salt to taste

1. Keep all the ingredients ready to make Masala Pori / Masala Puffed Rice
a. Crush the garlic with skin.
b. Cut the dry red chillies into half.
2. Heat Coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds. When mustard starts to splutter, add in the urad dal.
3. When urad dal starts to turn brown color, add in the roasted peanuts and roast it for about a minute.
4. Add crushed garlic, curry leaves and dry red chilli. Saute it for a minute.
5. Reduce the flame to low and  add turmeric powder, little salt and saute for another minute so that the turmeric powder mixes well with other ingredients.
6. Add the puffed rice and mix it well for 2 to 3 minutes.

Tasty and crispy Masala Pori - Masala Puffed Rice is ready. Enjoy it with a cup of coffee or tea.

  1. I have added lot of garlic in this recipe, if you do not like the flavor, you can add less or no garlic.
  2. For frying I used coconut oil as I like that aroma. You can use any cooking oil to make this.
  3. I have added less spice here as my kids are great fans of this snack. You can increase the number of chillies according to your spice tolerance.
