Drumstick Masala - Murungakkai Masala

Drumstick Masala - Murungakkai Masala, drumstick is a common vegetable we get in South India especially in Tamil Nadu. Murungakkai sambar is a famous dish in Tamil Nadu. We can make diffent varieties of dishes using Drumstick. The one I have shown here is a masala kind of preparation where we grind all the ingredients except drumstick and make the curry. This will be little different than usual preparation and at the same time this will taste good too.

Drumstick Masala - Murungakkai Masala

Preparation Time : 15 Minutes | Cooking Time : 30 Minutes | Serves : 5

Drumstick - 5 No.
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp.
Curry Leaves - 2 sprigs
Oil - 1 tbsp.
Salt to taste

To Grind
Shallots - 20 to 25 No.
Tomato - 2 No.
Ginger Garlic Paste - 1 tsp.
Fennel Seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Cinnamon Stick - 1/2 inch piece
Cloves - 2 No.
Cardamom - 1 No.
Red Chili Powder - 1 tsp.
Coriander Powder - 2 tsp.
Grated Coconut - 3 tbsp.

1. Keep all the ingredients ready for making Drumstick Masala - Murungakkai Masala.
a. Roughly peel the skin of drumstick and cut them to 2 inch pieces.
b. Peel and wash the shallots.
c. Roughly chop the tomatoes.
d. Grate the coconut.
2. Add all the ingredients mentioned under 'To Grind' section into a blender and grind them to a coarse paste. Add water only if required.
3. Heat oil in a pan and add the ground masala. Saute on medium flame for about 5 minutes.
4. Add salt and turmeric powder and saute for few more minutes.
5. When the raw smell of masala goes off and the water dries up, add the drumstick pieces.
6. Mix the drumstick pieces to get coated with the masala. Saute it for about 2 to 3 minutes. Add enough water to cook the drumstick.
7. When the masala starts to thicken add the curry leaves and mix well. Cook till the water dries up and the masala becomes thick as shown in the picture below. Switch off the flame.

Drumstick Masala - Murungakkai Masala is ready to serve. Serve it with variety rice or kuzhambu sadam.
