Avarai Paruppu Sadam

Avarai Paruppu Sadam, this is one of the easy rice dish which we can make for lunch or dinner. The preparation of this dish is similar to making arisi paruppu sadam. In arisi paruppu sadam, we use toor dal along with rice but here instead of toor dal we are going to add avarai paruppu. Apart from that the procedure is same. Lets see recipe on making this dish.

Avarai Paruppu Sadam

Preparation Time : 30 Minutes | Cooking Time : 30 Minutes | Serves : 3

Raw Rice - 1 Cup
Avarai Paruppu - 1/2 Cup
Shallots - 20 No.
Tomato - 2 No.
Garlic - 10 Cloves
Green Chili - 1 No.
Dry Red Chili - 2 No.
Mustard Seeds - 1/4 tsp.
Cumin Seeds - 1/4 tsp.
Asafoetida - small piece
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp.
Curry Leaves - 2 sprigs
Chopped Coriander Leaves - 2 tbsp.
Oil - 1 tbsp.
Ghee - 1 tbsp.
Salt to taste

1. Keep all the ingredients ready for making Avarai Paruppu Sadam.
a. Peel and wash shallots and garlic. Chop them roughly.
b. Roughly chop the tomatoes.
c. Soak Rice and Avarai Paruppu together for half an hour.
2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Add shallots, garlic cloves, green chili, dry red chili and curry leaves.
3. Saute the onion till it turns translucent. Add the roughly chopped tomatoes and salt.
4. Add sambar powder, salt and asafoetida and mix well. Cook till the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
5. Add 3 cups of water and bring to boil. Drain the water from soaked rice & dal. Add the rice and dal to the pressure cooker. Mix it up well. (Note: 1 Cup rice&Dal will required 2 Cups of water)
6. Close the lid of pressure cooker and allow it to cook for 4 whistles. Open the cooker after the pressure is completely released. Add a tablespoon of ghee and mix it gently.

Easy Avarai Paruppu Sadam is ready to serve.
