Pidi Karunai Kizhangu Thokku

Pidi Karunai Kizhangu Thokku, this is a different dish which many of us may not know about it. I learned this recipe from my mom. Making this is little time consuming but believe me the taste will be amazing. You can eat this with anything like idli, dosa, steamed rice, variety rice etc. Just give it a try, you will definitely like it.


Ingredients:
Pidi Karunai Kizhangu - 8 No.
Shallots - 250 gm
Garlic - 100 gm
Green Chili - 5 No.
Tamarind - 1 lemon size
Turmeric Powder - 1 tsp.
Asafoetida - 1/2 tsp.
Red Chili Powder - 1 tsp.
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp.
Fenugreek Seeds - 1 tsp.
Curry Leaves - 3 Springs
Gingelly Oil - 250 ml
Salt to taste

Method:
1. Peel and wash shallots and garlic. Finely chop the shallots and garlic. Slit the green chilies. Pressure cook the pidi karunai for 3 whistles and peel the skin. Soak the tamarind in water.
2. Mash the cooked pidi karunai  using a masher. Add the chopped shallots, garlic, green chilies, salt, asafoetida, turmeric powder and the mashed pidi karunai in a bowl.
3. Mix all the ingredient well using the hand or a masher. Extract pulp from the soaked tamarind and add to this mixture. Mix it well and allow it marinate in this tamarind water for over night.
4. Next day, heat oil in a heavy bottom pan and add mustard seeds. Once the mustard splutters, add the fenugreek seeds and curry leaves. Saute for few seconds.
5. Now, add the marinated mixture to the oil and mix well.
6. Add red chili powder and mix well. Cook on low flame till the oil separates.
7. Keep stirring it often. Make sure it is not stuck to the bottom and sides of the pan. At a particular point, it will start rolling nicely without sticking to the pan and the spatula (just like halwa). When the oil starts to separate, switch off the flame. Allow it cool and transfer to a glass jar. (Note: It might take around one hour to get to the final stage, so keep stirring patiently)
Pidi Karunai Kizhangu Thokku is ready to serve. You can even mix this with hot steamed rice and eat, it will be yummy.
